Travel Guest Post: Must See Art Exhibitions in 2012

London is one of the best places in the world to see pieces of art, as the city centre is filled with museums and galleries. As well as permanent displays, visitors will be able to make the most of temporary exhibitions – and in 2012, there are plenty to put in your diary.

This year, there are more reasons than ever to book a stay in London cheap hotels, as the capital’s biggest galleries are holding new displays over the next 12 months.

Picasso and Modern British Art at Tate Britain

One exhibition that you are sure to not want to miss while on a trip to the city is the Picasso and Modern British Art event, being put on at Tate Britain.

If you come to the gallery between February 15th and July 15th, you’ll have the chance to see some of Pablo Picasso’s most acclaimed pieces of art.

The event also looks at the influence of the Spanish artist on British painters throughout the 20th century.

You will be able to learn about the painter’s reputation around the world, as well as take a look at the work of other artists who were inspired by Picasso, including Henry Moore, Francis Bacon and Duncan Grant.

Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomy at The Queen’s Gallery

For those keen on going further back in art history, the exhibition entitled Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomy could be of interest.

This is being put on at the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace and visitors will have the chance to take a look at some of the artist’s most famous drawings of human anatomy, including A Skull Sectioned and Studies of the Foetus in the Womb.

These fascinating sketches will give attendees a better idea of the accuracy of the drawings, as well as an insight into the type of work being produced during the Renaissance period.

Yoko Ono at the Serpentine Gallery

If you’re looking for a different type of exhibition to visit this year, you might be keen on heading to the Serpentine Gallery between June 19th and September 9th.

This is because it is putting on a display of art produced by Yoko Ono. While you might be more familiar with Ono as being the widow of The Beatles’ John Lennon – as well as a musician, writer and peace activist – she is also a talented artist, and this exhibition is an excellent opportunity to see some of her works.

The display comes as part of the London 2012 Festival, which will see the entire city celebrating cultural achievements in the lead-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in the capital this summer.

Yoko Ono at the Serpentine Gallery is the first exhibition in London dedicated to Ono in over a decade, so this could be an excellent opportunity to see her art, in addition to displays about her influence on music and film.

There is a wide variety of exhibitions to see in London this year, so make sure you take time to choose which ones you visit wisely.

You might wish to take in a lot of displays during your trip, or combine presentations of classic artists with lesser-known ones. Whatever you decide to do, you are sure to have an enjoyable time hopping between the capital’s most famous galleries, soaking up the city’s rich culture.
