Naples, in addition to known excavations of Pompeii offers another world-famous archaeological site, the ruins of Herculaneum. To move in and out the excavations, it is advisable to arrange an excursion with a little advance.
The excavations are extensive and to enjoy them during a walk that is not tiring, perhaps accompanied by one of the many pompeii tour guides, it is important not to arrive too late: in winter excavations close at 17.00 and admission is permitted only up to 15.30 while in summer the last admission is at 16.30 and closing at 18.00.

The ancient city of Herculaneum, already severely damaged by the earthquake in 62 AD, was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius, which covered it with an impressive mass of mud, ash and other eruptive materials drawn from rainwater which penetrates into every opening, solidified into a hard and dense layer 15-20 meters long.
Do not miss the buildings: the House of Aristide and the House of argon, the genius of the House, the House of the skeleton, the House of the Hotel, Spa, the Shrine, the Theatre and the Villa of the Papyri.
At the exit of the site We recommend to have lunch in one of the many restaurants nearby, or enjoy a simple sandwich into the excavation area, and specifically in that used for the lunch break.
Pompeii and Herculaneum require some time to be visited: it’s best to stay in Naples, so you can spend even a half day at the Archaeological Museum, where all the finds from the Vesuvian cities are, or alternatively you can stay in some of the beautiful countries of the Sorrento Peninsula, Vico, Sant’Agnello, Meta, Sorrento with the possibility to stay among fragrant citrus groves.
Getting to the Vesuvian cities is very easy for someone who has car, the motorway Napoli Salerno borders them all, and parking spaces are very large and spacious. Alternatively there is the train: Circumvesuviana railway connects Naples to Sorrento and stops at places of interest.
The best time to visit is in May and September, low prices, small crowds, archaeologists from various universities to work here and there, the mild climate. Pompeii is huge, hat and bottle of water even if not in summer are necessary: in a vast space you will discover enclosed centuries of history.
