Travel Guest Post: Best Nightlife Spots in Sydney

sydney_night

If there’s one thing that really sets Sydney apart from other Australian cities, it’s that there are always plenty of things happening after the sun has set behind its world-famous harbour. The trick is in knowing what’s happening, and where to find it. Fortunately, the locals are mostly a pretty friendly bunch, and striking up conversation with one usually isn’t too hard, especially if there’s a beer (or three) involved. Just a few minutes of conversation can make you privy to a wealth of inside information on what’s hot, as well as what’s not.

If talking to strangers isn’t your thing, there are plenty of websites that are excellent starting points for the Sydney newbie, such as Time Out Sydney, with its well-organized directory of club events and venues.

Best kept secrets

One of Sydney’s best-kept nightlife secrets would have to be the Palmer and Co speakeasy, tucked away behind the Establishment on George St in the CBD. Well established in its own right (pun not intended) as the place to head to if you work in high finance or are hoping to nab someone who does. Prohibition influences can be found all through the joint, from the bartenders in 1920s garb to the images of famous bootleggers attached to the curved brick ceiling. The specialty drinks offered do the period proud, too. They include an impressive range of rums, tequila and whiskey, and an exclusive selection of skilfully mixed cocktails straight from the era of Temperance.

There are definitely plenty of other hidden gems, and the best way to find them is simply to keep your ears and eyes open (and make nice with the locals while you do).

Most popular clubs

There’s no shortage of nightclubs in Sydney and far too many to list here, but if you’re looking for one of the biggest and best, the Chinese Laundry on Sussex St is pegged as both. Hidden beneath the Slip Inn, it’s a mecca for electronic music lovers, attracting top house, electro, tech and other dance music DJ talent from all around the globe.

Just across Darling Harbour, the Star Casino has plenty to offer the night owl who is looking for fun and maybe some three card Baccarat on the side. Its Rock Lily bar is stocked to the ceiling with “the world’s most sought-after tequilas”, and often attracts seriously good international and local music acts.

Dress codes

Don’t forget to clothe yourself appropriately before heading out on the town. Australia may be known as the land of flip-flops and tank-tops, but that type of dress won’t get you through the door at most Sydney venues. The safest option is usually just neat and casual, and it’s best to avoid denim at the more up-market places. And boys: stick with close-toed shoes.

Sydney is much more than just a bridge and an opera house and there’s little wonder it’s a magnet for people with money to burn, those looking for a fast climb up the social ladder, and every imaginable stripe of thrill-seeker. Our advice would be to have a blast, but do it smart and, if possible, with a group of responsible adults… preferably one that can find a taxi at 5AM on a Sunday morning.
