San Francisco is a fantastic destination for all kinds of travelers. While the city is considered ‘big’ by many, the actual geographical size is only 49 square miles, making it one of the most compact big cities in America. With so many world-class attractions contained in such a compact geography, seeing the very best of San Francisco is easily done. Here are some must-see attractions in town.

1. The Golden Gate Bridge – The most iconic bridge in the world, the Golden Gate spans 1.7 miles and is said to be one of the most photographed things on earth. Visitors can drive or walk across the bridge and bikes are also allowed on the western side. From either end, the scenery is spectacular and makes for the quintessential photograph from a San Francisco holiday.

2. Fisherman’s Wharf – This waterfront marketplace is home to some of the city’s most incredible attractions. The Aquarium by the Bay is a must-see destination offering visitors a glimpse of some of the most stunning aquatic wildlife in the region and at Pier 39, the local population of sea lions is sure to delight all who come to marvel. 3. Alcatraz – The former island prison sits smack-dab in the middle of San Francisco Bay. The facility was once home to some of America’s most notorious prisoners as well as the site of some of the most sophisticated and elaborate escape attempts in the world. The prison itself has been closed since the 1960s but the stories are legendary and a tour of the island is an incredible way to explore the island’s past, present and future. Boats to ‘The Rock’ leave daily from Pier 43.

4. Cable Cars – San Francisco’s cable cars have been in operation since the 19th century. The cars themselves run on tracks and are moved throughout town by underground cables on one of three routes. The bells of the cable cars can be heard from several blocks away and fill the city with an old-world charm rarely found in America. For $5 visitors can purchase a ticket and ride the rails up and down some of San Francisco’s steepest hills which is a once in a lifetime experience.

5. Chinatown – The ‘Dragon’s Gate’ located at Grant Avenue and Bush Street marks the entrance to Chinatown. With 24 blocks jam packed with hustle, bustle, exotic shopping and delicious food, a wander through this enchanting neighbourhood is well worth your time. Grant Avenue is the oldest street in the city and the hub of this rich and vibrant area. Best explored on foot, visitors can purchase ancient potions, nibble on dim sum or witness first-hand the artisanal production of fortune cookies.
