Lifestyle: 9 Most Extraordinary Weddings

Putting on your Batman costume and jumping from 10000 feet while holding hands with the love of your life might not be the first idea that comes to mind when you’re planning your wedding. More people today, however, are going for a weird and unique ceremony for their big day. They’ll have to look at that photo for their entire life after all; and what’s better than having one in which you’re screaming your guts out of fear… from the altitude of course, not marriage.

If you’re planning your big day soon, here are nine extraordinary weddings to inspire you. Don’t suddenly show up in a Game of Thrones outfit for your wedding without telling your partner, though!

The Bat-Wedding

That Batman line in the introduction wasn’t just a cheap pun; it was inspired by the unique wedding of Sharon Wetherell and Neil Vaughan who tied the knot while dressed up as their favourite super heroes. The entire attendees were actually a colourful band of superheroes. Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Robin, Poison Ivy, Lara Croft, the Joker, Bananaman and the Incredibles were all attending. Luckily, no one used their super power, and the wedding went peacefully on 31 October in Devon, England.

Medieval Wedding

Themed weddings documented in international media included a World War II themed wedding – that actually involved a lightsabers fight between the groom and Darth Vader – , A Zombie wedding (that included sounds of sirens and Lancaster bombers flying overhead), A officiated a wedding ceremony in 2007, and a Klingon wedding. One couple, however, Sian Jenkins and Rupert Hammerton, decided to enact a marriage that hasn’t been seen since 800 years: a royal medieval wedding. Held at Lulworth Castle in England, the groom fully dressed in steel armour with brass and velvet, waited his bride who arrived on a white mare in a garb made from 270 feet of silk. The ceremony was followed by a day of jousting and sword fighting. No one was hurt in the duels, but the wedding did cost more than 100,000 British pounds.

skydive

Jumping into Marriage!

A sky-diving wedding is so mainstream. That’s why Jeroen and Sandra Kippers decided do their entire wedding on a platform in the air, hanged by a crane 160 feet above the ground – with 20 of their invitees up there with them. After their vows, the couple bungee jumped from the platform, giving the term “jumping into marriage” a whole new meaning.

The Sharks of Love

They say you don’t really know if you have the right partner until you put them in a shark cage and they don’t run away. That’s what April Pignataro and Michael Curry did for their big day. The couple put their scuba diving outfit and dived inside a cage into Atlantis Marine World in New York. They said their wedding vows over radio transmitters, right next to tiger sharks and other scary stuff.

robot

The Robot Marriage

“Tiro” is the first robot in history that restaurants and spas, but not the last one. Since 2010, the Japanese “I-Fairy” robot was becoming a popular Master of Ceremonies for Japanese couples. Getting married with the blessings of a robot will definitely put you on the list of extraordinary marriages for now. But it might have a potential downside: Terminator, anyone?

bridesmaids

An army of bridesmaids

Some people have to make a hard choice picking their bridesmaid or best man from the ranks of their family and friends. Some people though, don’t have this dilemma as they’ll have an army of bridesmaid and best men standing by their side waiting them to say “I do”. Sri Lankan Couple Nisansala and Nalin have just broken the world record this November for the most bridesmaids with 126 bridesmaids, 25 best men, 20 page boys, and 23 flowers girls. Like that wasn’t awesome enough, all the bridesmaids were dressed in beautiful traditional costumes in shades of purple and gold.

The Elephant in the Room

We’re not talking about your mother-in-law; we’re talking about a real elephant here. Nicole Richie, the daughter of the famous singer Lionel Richie, invited an elephant to her wedding ceremony for good luck. The invitee list included names like Benji Madden, Gavin Rossdale, and Khloe Kardashian, but who cares about celebrities when an elephant is on your guest list!

Marriage in Wonderland

Having 10,000 black roses in your wedding ceremony is not a good sign… unless you’re a Gothic symbol and a big fan of Alice in Wonderland. That’s what Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz had for their wedding. Their wedding cake had a top hat, a tea cup, a stopwatch and a pot of flowers on top… but no magic mushrooms, of course.

The Beckham Wedding

The wedding of Victoria Adams and David Beckham in 1999 is still one of the most extraordinary celebrity weddings in the last decade that it deserves a category on its own. Donning a golden crown encrusted with diamonds, Victoria walked down a 60-foot walkway covered in flowers in the huge Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin, while a harp and violin duo played Mozart, Bach and Handel. Beckhams sat on golden thrones for the reception, before spending the night in the castle like true royal families.
