Beauty and the Heat – Makeup Tips for Traveling in Hot Countries

GirlsMakeupTips

In a particularly hot country like South Africa, and after traveling on Johannesburg flights, the last thing you thing you want to be doing is constantly recheck your makeup every five minutes when you’re on holiday. Heat and humidity will invariably cause any heavy makeup to slide off your face in under ten minutes, not only making you feel itchy and uncomfortable, and it’s also really not a good look for those holiday snaps.

The best thing to do is to keep it simple and fresh with your makeup and cosmetic routine. In the same way that you’d wear cooler and lighter clothing in hotter climates, simply follow suit with your makeup. Start with a light moisturizer and a primer before you apply your foundation, to make sure that it stays put. If you wear a heavy coverage foundation, consider switching this with a tinted moisturizer that has an SPF to protect your delicate facial skin from the sun’s harmful rays. To get a boost on your tan, try a light sweep of bronzer over your foundation; this will also work to help your base stay in place.

Team this with some colored lip gloss, light-colored eyeshadow and waterproof mascara for a fuss-free look. For night-time, you can switch this look up with a brighter colored eyeshadow and neutral gloss. Don’t forget to also apply your primer under your eyeshadow so it stays put all day.

For hot climates, it also makes sense to switch up your usual wardrobe for some cool alternatives. Go for pretty chiffon, linen and cotton when you’re shopping for your holiday clothing. Opt for light separate items in these natural fabrics so that you can throw on and mix and match easily. Pair them with comfortable sandals or flats. The trick to holiday clothing, as with makeup, is to make it as straightforward and as comfortable as possible.

You don’t want to ruin your trip because you have to keep ducking back to the hotel to change clothes or you can’t walk because your shoes are hurting you. This applies to what you wear on the plane as well: you don’t want to get halfway through long-haul Caribbean only to realize your clothes or makeup are making you itchy or uncomfortable.

Remembering to keep it simple and comfortable will ensure that you’re cool and stylish whether you’re visiting the pyramids in Egypt, or browsing a market for hours in Marrakesh.
