Top 5 Movie Firework Moments

Every important scene arrives with a bang, sometimes literally. Here are five of the most breath-taking firework movie scenes:

  1. The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings series built up an entire world of fantasy. The introduction of the Shire and hobbits was and is unlike any other story. One of the most impressive scenes from the initial film is the celebration of Bilbo Baggins birthday, when Merry and Pippin steal and set off some fireworks. They light a firework shaped like a dragon, and within a few seconds there is a fully formed fiery dragon coming right at them. The dragon then flies off into the distance and bursts into a display of fireworks. Everyone cheers and it is just one of the most spectacular firework moments in any film.

  1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

With a story about magic and wizardry, sparks are always flying. However an eminent scene in the fifth film of the series is during the departing scene of Professor Umbridge. Fred and George fly into the Great Hall and throw fireworks at Professor Umbridge, magnifying the sentiment of that entire scene.

  1. The Great Gatsby

This is quite possibly one of the best introductions of a character. Aside from the anticipation of his arrival, and the impressive luxurious party, the character turns around, says ‘I’m Gatsby’ and fireworks are then seen going off in the background. He grins and raises his glass. That is Gatsby, and that entire moment is a summation of his character. It is brilliantly done and just heightens the intensity of that moment.

  1. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

This film is about family and survival, the battle between criminals and a child that continues to outwit them (you’d think they’d have learnt their lesson after the first one!). The greatest scene of this film is when the ‘Pigeon lady’ traps the two burglars, and Kevin runs to light fireworks. They go off into the sky, creating noise and light, with the arrival of the police completing the scene. This adds to the finality and relief that the burglars have been caught and it is generally just a very feel-good moment.

  1. Toy Story

Every Walt Disney film begins with the eminent fireworks blasting around the castle and the Walt Disney logo. It has become iconic. However they have also featured some upscale firework displays in their films, but this one is by far my favourite. During the final scene of the first Toy Story film, Buzz is strapped to an ignited rocket, is holding on to Woody and travelling through the air. The rocket eventually leads them up into the sky, and Buzz releases his wings just as the rocket bursts into pieces. Buzz and Woody then say some of the most quotable lines ever. ‘You’re flying!’ ‘I’m not flying, I’m falling with style.’ This entire scene just makes the film.

So there you have it, five of the best movie scenes featuring fireworks and the way that they contribute to movie history.
