Along the south shore of Long Island, the long strip of Fire Island beckons summer travelers to enjoy its beaches and spend the Summer on Fire. Close to New York, Fire Island is the perfect place for an escape from city life and the daily hustle and bustle.

Getting There

If you have a car you can get to Fire Island on one of two bridges – Robert Moses Causeway or William Floyd Parkway. There are parking lots with a fee on the island that you can leave your car at, as there are no paved roads past these points.

Many people arrive at Fire Island by ferry. A bit more fun than a car, various ferries leave often and arrive at three main points on the island – Patchogue, Sayville, or Bay Shore. Once you’re here, you can get around the island by hiking, biking, or even taking a water taxi.

What To Do

Water and outdoor activities of any sort are what you will find on Fire Island, swimming, biking, tennis, sailing, and surfing are all popular activities.

The long coastline is inviting for beach goers, with quiet, pristine beaches perfect for relaxing and exploring the boardwalk.

Sailing and boating in the area is a long-standing tradition with many sailing clubs such as Point O’ Woods and Saltaire. Each year, the clubs battle it out in an annual regatta and the event draws many to watch and cheer along.

Want to try sailing for yourself? The Appalachian Mountain Club hosts lessons for beginners on their fleet.

A visit to the Fire Island Lighthouse is a definite must for any first time visitors. Built in 1857, the lighthouse is a strong part of Fire Island’s history, lighting the way for European immigrants sailing into New York Harbor. The lighthouse is open daily to the public in the summer, and guided tours are available.

Where to Eat

While you’re on the beach, snack shacks can be found for a quick meal. Restaurants on Fire Island are laid back with an inviting seaside atmosphere. Have dinner at Canteen for Mexican tapas, or eat the freshest seafood right on the shore at Jumping Jack’s Seafood Shack.

A perfect summer day in Long Island just begs for a picnic. Bring your own food along for comfort and ease and eat right by the beach.

Free yourself from traffic, buildings, and responsibilities – a trip to Fire Island is sure to relax and rejuvenate you.
