Escape the Inauguration at These Remote Homestays

Inauguration Day—it’s almost here. There’s no escaping the fact that Donald Trump will soon officially become the leader of the USA, but if you’re looking for a Twitter-free zone or just another timezone to escape to, Homestay.com has seven recommendations (from yurts to Balinese homes!) in the remotest of places.

Homestay.com, a growing competitor to Airbnb, gives travelers the chance to live with (and like) a local in his or her home in 50,000 in over 150 countries. While Airbnb has its “Trips,” Homestay.com hosts are usually happy to give guided tours and participate in their favorite local activities with their guests–oftentimes for free.

Yurt in Mala, Spain (from $52 per night)

Surrounded by nature in Lanzarote’s wild countryside, Casa Serena is a stunning and comfortable yurt with its own garden and private space.  No worries, a shower is available only a few feet away!  Bikes are available to borrow and Stefano and his family boast that their breakfast, which is served in the outdoor area overlooking the sea, is “second to none”!

Farmhouse in Alba, Italy (from $48 per night)

Rossello and Carlo left Milan for a simpler life in Monferrato, Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous Italian wine regions in the world.  Their serene farmhouse is home to all sorts of animals ranging from geese and rabbits to donkey and chickens.  Typical attractions in the region include castles, vineyards, art and golf clubs.

Algadadiva’s spacious apartment, which overlooks Plaza of the Revolution, is the perfect place to stay.

Beach Retreat in Sydney, Australia (from $100 a night)

Take a break from the cold and Inauguration weekend and head to the other side of the world—Sydney, Australia, which is currently undergoing its fourth-warmest year ever. Travelers can rent a room with a balcony overlooking the world famous Bondi Beach in Zoe’s artsy, quirky, centrally-located home.  Zoe teaches computer classes and a Yoga Therapy program, which guests can enjoy for no extra cost.
