The summer is quickly approaching and what better way to get some major R&R and some sun than by visiting the sandy beaches of San Juan, Puerto—the isle of enchantment. It’s rich culture and lush tropical beaches make it the perfect romantic getaway for two (or can be fun for the entire family). It’s also the ideal vacation spot for those who crave a bit of “adventure.” Some vacation packages are even being offered as low as $600 this high season, so there’s really no excuse not to go explore the Caribbean. To give you a better idea of what Puerto Rico has to offer and list some fun things you can do, continue reading below.
Kayak in the Bio Bay
There are several different tourism groups that offer bio bay tours. No matter who you choose however, you’re sure to have the experience of your life. These tours lead you through a special bay/lagoon that sparkles and glows during the night due to special bioluminescent plankton. It’s truly a site to see. The tour starts off right before sunset. A guide will then assign you a personal kayak and will lead you through a canopy of trees that lead you to a lagoon. As you make your way through the canopy, night will fall. You will then begin to notice that with each stoke, your ore will cause the water to shimmer. You will begin to see “glowing” water life as well. Remember to bring bug spray and prepare yourself for a good workout.
Hike in El Yunque
Luquillo—which is a short drive from San Juan—is home to El Yunque, the national rainforest of Puerto Rico. You can hire a tour guide to take you on a small excursion and drop you at the mouth of the hiking trail, but the rainforest itself requires no entry fee. The forest is beautiful. So beautiful in fact that it has a bid to be the 8th Wonder of the World. On your path, you will encounter a tower with a spiral staircase as well as a flowing waterfall and connecting natural pool that is safe to swim in. So make sure to bring your swimsuit.
Party at the Bacardi Distillery
Puerto Ricans are notorious for their Bacardi rum. If you’re curious about how it’s made, want to learn the history behind the Bacardi bat symbol, the early rum making years, as well as enjoy a few complimentary drinks then visit Casa Barcadi during the day. There’s a short film and a trolley tour included. The tour is free.
El Castillo de San Cristobal
If you can appreciate architecture and history, then you’ll really love El Castillo de San Cristobal. It’s the largest Spanish fort built-in the western hemisphere. It was completed in 1785 and was used as a defense building from the east. There are still cannons, prisoner chambers, and a beautiful view of the city and ocean.
Visit Culebra Beaches
While all the beaches in Puerto Rico are beautiful, if you really want to be blown away you might need to take a small drive to the coastal city of Culebra. Here you will find Famenco Beach which was once dubbed as the second most beautiful beach in the World by the Discovery Channel. The water is crystal blue and the sands pure white. You can see the mountain range from all angles. The sights are truly breath-taking.
