What does the summer of 2012 have in store for us travellers? What cities are desperately calling our names, what hotels are clearing up their reservations, and what beaches are welcoming the bright and shining sun? Top cities to visit always remain unlimited, but we have tried to name the top five this summer. Whether its sports that drive you or cultural phenomena, the majority of the world’s travellers will most likely agree with this list.
London, England
Yup, you guessed it! London, for the third time, will be hosting the summer Olympics starting on the 27th of July. The capital is being transformed this very moment in preparation for the games. It’s an experience not found anywhere else—from rushing to catch the underground tube, to watching the Tower Bridge lift allowing ships to pass—you don’t want to miss it. With the Olympic Games’ diversity goals, London will be filled with tourists from all cultural backgrounds and nationalities. If you were worried about getting lost in a big city like London, don’t be because there is an estimated one million extra people in the capital this summer.
Bangalore, India
The first city that comes in mind when you mention India is New Delhi. But traveling further down south introduces Bangalore, or Bangaluru, flourishing with history and culture. Amongst its welcoming residents who are high on the good life, Bangalore is home to much of India’s popular cuisine and party destinations. Filled with bars, this city is run on a high-speed metro system that can get you from one tourist attraction to another in no time. If cultural experiences are your thing, then you cannot miss the rich history of Bangalore this summer!
Muscat, Oman
In recent years, Oman has focused all efforts on attracting tourists from all around the world. From opening new museums to building comfortable resorts, Muscat has been the centre of this redevelopment. The capital now flourishes with endless cultural events and luxurious accommodation for travellers from every part of the globe. The sun does indeed shine bright in Muscat, with temperatures reflecting those of a true summer city. Apart from the renovation taken place across the city, Muscat still takes pride in their old town souks—the real cultural home to the Middle East. Muscat promises to be a unique destination different than others. If that is your taste, then what are you waiting for?!
Hong Kong
When it comes to shopping, Honk Kong is definitely the place to be this summer. It remains the most liberated city in China as it continues efforts in becoming a full democracy. Hong Kong is known as Asia’s ‘city that never sleeps’. If you’re concerned about being bored this summer, then Hong Kong promises to offer endless activities, 24/7! Built around templates and monuments, the day can be spent visiting infinite tourist spots. Spend the evening exploring the villages or go shopping and gallery hopping across the busy city. As the sun begins to set, check out the famous bars of Soho. Of course, you can’t miss the city’s exotic food stalls. Be sure to take a day to visit the city’s new top attraction: the Toy Story theme park in Disney Land! If you want variety, then don’t miss Hong Kong this summer!
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
As I said before, we want to interest the general tourist population. Pearl Harbor may be in some people’s taste, it may not. Whatever the case is, it is undeniably a beautiful tourist location. Last year’s $56m project resulted in the opening of a new museum and various movie theatres and exhibits across the area. Furthermore, the site of Japan’s surrender along with various other historical phenomena lies in the heart of Oahu. Pearl Harbor, home to historic naval vessels, is definitely a place to visit for you sea folk.
