Australia is a country which has a reputation for extreme heat, extreme landscapes not to mention a population which likes to work hard and play hard. There are many iconic venues across Australia which you should consider when you next plan an adventure abroad. There is literally everything from highly physical exhaustion activities, to more relaxed atmospheric experiences to a walk on the wild side in the outback.
We will now take a look at some of Australia’s more iconic venues which you may like to include in your next adventure agenda.
The Sydney Opera House
If somebody was to mention Australia to you perhaps the first thing that would come into your mind would be the overpowering, atmospheric and very eye-catching Sydney Opera House. The look and the design of this particularly iconic venue will literally take your breath away and is as important to Australia as the Eiffel Tower is to France, Buckingham Palace is to the UK and the leaning Tower of Pisa is to Italy.
This amazing venue, which takes in a timeless and ageless design, has been home to around 3000 performances a year since it was opened back in October 1973. While around 2 million people visit the Sydney Opera House to see the variety of entertainment, a further 200,000 are awestruck by the architecture tours available each day.
Ayres Rock
Sometimes nature throws up an array of puzzles, strange events and unexplained discoveries such as Ayres Rock. How did it get there? Does it have spiritual powers? Just how big is Ayres Rock?
Aside from the fact this is the world’s largest single piece of stone it has an aura and presence which is mysterious and enticing. It appears to be stranded in an area of the world in which it does not seem to belong and no scientists can truly explained exactly how it got there. Did you know that Ayers Rock is only 350 m in height but has as circumference of over 9 km? Did you know that the vast majority of the volume of Ayres Rock is hidden below the surface making it one of the largest structures on the planet?
Locals are convinced there is a spiritual meaning to Ayres Rock and this is the kind of venue which will literally take your breath away and leave you scratching your head.
The Great Barrier Reef
We’ve all heard of the Great Barrier Reef, the array of sea life which depends on this living and breathing coral but do you know exactly how far it stretches for? If we tell you that this reef of coral covers over 2,600 km of the Queensland coastline with a total area of 300,000 km², can you now start to imagine the size? Well, to put this into perspective, the UK is only 243,610 km² – yes, the Great Barrier Reef is larger than the UK!
The Great Barrier Reef attracts in excess of 2 million tourists a year and has been the focus of environmental attention for some time now. Changes in the structure and the make-up of the Great Barrier Reef have been directly linked to climate change and indeed it is seen as one of the more delicate natural indicators in this particular field. It is home to not just an array of sea life which lives predominantly on the reef but it also helps to feed and attract other wildlife such as turtles and dolphins. Like so many iconic venues in Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is a phenomenon the likes of which you will never see again.
