Not to be confused with Sicily, the Isles of Scilly are just off the south-western coast of the UK and are officially part of Cornwall. Made up of around 50 islands, 5 of them are inhabited and waiting to be explored. With temperatures averaging higher than the UK mainland itself, this could be the perfect destination for a short, relaxing break and the islands are easily accessible via plane and boats. Here is a quick guide to the Scilly Isles and which one to head for.
Where to go: The five inhabited islands are St Mary’s, Bryher, St Martin’s, St Agnes and Tresco. The one you choose depends what type of break you are looking for. St. Mary’s is the largest Isle and features castles and coves as well as a harbour and a number of nature reserves. It’s a great island for those who love spending time outdoors. Tresco is a quiet island, but has regular events throughout the year, such as art exhibitions and food festivals.
When to go: Being just off the coast of the UK, the Scilly Isles have a similar weather pattern to the mainland, but slightly warmer in the summer months. The summer months offer easier access too, so it’s best to travel then. Not simply for ease, but also because there are more flexible options, meaning a potentially cheaper trip. However, getting there will be a reasonable price anyway due to its close proximity to the UK.
What to do: In 1975 the Isles of Scilly were declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which is why so much of the island remains untainted and free of development. So spend time just soaking up the fresh sea air and admire the unspoiled scenery. St Mary’s holds a local market where you can sample some of the fresh foods and the Tresco and Bryher food festival is held one weekend in September.
Getting around: Getting around here doesn’t have to be just a practical thing – you can have an adventure; horseback, boat, bike and buggy are just four of the transport options for getting around the Isles of Scilly, and they are ideal ways to see as much as you can in a short space of time, while breathing in the fresh sea breeze.
Don’t miss: While on the Isles, there are certain things that you just cannot leave without seeing! Take one of the boat trips and cross to the next Island within minutes, admiring the scenery and sea life as you travel. The Islands are known for their fabulous flowers and fields, rich with colour – perfect for nature lovers. If you are traveling with children, there’s plenty to keep them entertained, too, including beautiful beaches.
