The Austrian Tirol is an undeniably beautiful location and deep in the heart of the Ziller Valley there, lies the popular destination of Mayrhofen.
The reason why Mayrhofen is such a magnet is easy to understand when you go there yourself, as it offers everything that a traveller would want, from excellent skiing facilities to some stunning scenery for those that are just happy to soak up the amazing landscape.
The Austrian Tourist Board is currently promoting the cultural opportunities and experiences that await you when you visit the country and Mayrhofen is the epitome of why Austria continues to be such a popular place to visit for European tourists.
Spoilt for choice
You can find out more about the cultural delights of Austria in general when you click here, but the focus here is on Mayrhofen and the surrounding area.
There at least 70 places in Mayrhofen itself, where you can dine out, and many of these restaurants are considered to be very affordable as well as offering excellent local and international cuisine.
If you are looking for a good example of a typical local eatery, the Grill Kuchl fits the bill. It has only a handful of tables for an intimate atmosphere and the wooden beams and large wooden tables add to the relaxed and welcoming feel, which is typical of the welcome you are likely to receive in most places.
Skiing for all ages
Although Mayrhofen and the Ziller Valley offer a wide range of activities, it is certainly an area that is rightly popular with skiers of all ages and abilities.
Mayrhofen is considered to be an excellent ski holiday destination because it offers a challenge to everyone from beginner to expert and with 91 pistes and a good level of snow cover due to the fact that it is 2000m above sea level, your opportunity to explore is unlikely to be limited.
A ski lift delivers beginners to the area of Ahorn and snowboarders will likely head for Vans Penken Park for their thrills. The more accomplished skiers amongst your party, can head to the area of Penken, and take on the famous devils run, to get the pulse racing.
Sightseeing
Mayrhofen is a great base to explore the area from as it has its own train station, which also happens to be inexpensive to use and very reliable, which will be a pleasant change for UK commuters on holiday!
Consider taking a train ride to Lake Achensee via Jenbach and you can also reach Salzburg as well as a host of other destinations, if you fancy broadening your cultural horizons and experiencing even more of what Austria has to offer in addition to the area of Mayrhofen.
Walker’s paradise
You don’t have to ski or snowboard to enjoy a trip up the mountain to take in the scenery.
If you take a ride on the Penkhenbahn, you will be transported to the top of the mountain, where some fine views over Mayrhofen and the surrounding area await you, so don’t forget the camera.
Make sure you consider visiting the Austrian Tirol when planning your next European adventure and when you arrive in the Ziller Valley, you won’t be disappointed.
