Super Deluxe Room at the Portland Ace Hotel via Ace Hotel

The Ace Hotels, the first of which popped up in Seattle, are trendy hotels with an artsy, yet unpretentious design aesthetic.

The Ace Hotels are found in such desirable destinations as Portland (shown above), New York, Palm Springs, London, Los Angeles, Panama, and of course, Seattle. The rooms at these hotels are not elaborate or expensive, but they do attract an eclectic crowd of hip, artistic visitors.

Rooms are adorned with artwork, and not expensive or elaborate furnishings. One theme that runs through the decor at each of these locales is a functional, minimal furniture style, generally low in profile and somewhat industrial. Instead, the eye tracks to large statement pieces of fresh, local artwork or an extensive collection of smaller pieces. The Ace Hotels also stay true to their respective communities. For instance, the Palm Springs location has a strong nautical theme (below).

To capture the look of an Ace Hotel bedroom, make the room about the wall behind the bed rather than the bed itself. Keep the bed, side tables and lighting functional and minimal, but of course, still inviting. Start with a platform bed. There are many gorgeous platform beds made of reclaimed wood or other gorgeous materials. Keep the bedding and side tables minimal. The wall above is now a blank canvas for a wall-sized mural or a gallery wall of artwork.

When it comes to seating areas, think about bold, graphic art and a mix of materials and textures. This room places a mid-century modern couch and chair on a vibrant oriental rug. Two unique chairs carved from solid Indonesian teak surround a modern coffee table with sharp angles. Together, the room seems to effortlessly span decades and design styles in a cohesive manner. The bold light fixture and artwork merry perfectly with this Ace Hotel-themed living room.
