The clean, modern design of the rooms are complimented by a unique piece of art on Ace Hotel Chicago letterhead stationary–each carefully stippled, painted or hand-drawn by a student of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Built-in plywood and linoleum furnishings juxtaposed with the polished steel nod to the designs of Arne Jacobsen and Richard Neutra.

Neighborhood

A few blocks from the Morgan-Lake L station and within walking distance to much of Chicago’s best dining — in a city that boasts  to some of the most innovative kitchens and inspired menus in the world.

The thriving art, design and food culture of the West Loop, as well as the narrative of ingenuity that underlies the city as a whole, has inspired Ace Hotel Chicago’s ethos — to treat everything as an experiment, to never stop learning or making and to keep our minds and hearts wide open.

Design

The Ace worked with Los Angeles based studio, Commune, on the design. The goal was to create a space that married mid-western craftsmanship with utilitarian design. Polished steel tubing, perforated brass, plywood and linoleum provide the building blocks for the interiors. Simple, straightforward and thoughtfully detailed materials evoke Mies Van De Rohe’s work at the Illinois Institute of Technology.  To add a layer of warmth and texture to the clean lines, simple coloration, they have added hand-woven textiles, natural leather, wools, and linens.

In the public spaces, relax on utilitarian furnishings with a modernist feel in a rich but muted palette, complimented by bold geometric patterns. An atrium between the lobby and event space creates an internal light flow throughout the entire area and restaurant. The design is a modern synthesis of functionality, art and design in the spirit of Chicago’s New Bauhaus.
