Health: 7 Tips For Staying Fit at Work

Researchers are finding a direct correlation between sitting for long periods of time and early death – even if you exercise regularly and eat a somewhat healthy diet. Our bodies were evolutionarily hard-wired to move around. Of course, there are some things you can do to reduce the amount of time you sit at work and to get more active. Here are 7 ways to help you do so:

  1. Walk around your office when on the phone. If you own a cordless phone, use it! Anytime somebody calls you on that phone, start pacing and walking around the office. If you want, you could even walk down the hallways and act as if you’re headed somewhere. You could even stand in place and shift your weight from side to side if you don’t have those options – at least it’s better than sitting.
  2. Stand at your computer. This takes some commitment, since most people with a desk job are used to sitting at their computer all day long. But if you own a laptop, you could put it on top of a filing cabinet or some other high-rise item in your office. If you really wanted to, you could even buy a standing desk.
  3. Take the scenic route. Rather you’re going to the bathroom or you’re headed for the elevator, take the long way. Walking a few extra feet may not seem like it would make a difference, but it can definitely add up over time. Make sure you always take every opportunity you get to walk a few extra miles!
  4. Replace the chairs in your office with exercise balls instead. Although it might sound ridiculous, inflatable balls are a fantastic alternative to a chair. Since exercise balls require that you stay balanced, they will help keep your muscles working constantly. Not to mention, they’re fun to sit on in the first place! If exercise balls aren’t your thing, I’ve seen people use stationary bikes or even treadmills as chairs! Sounds crazy, but it works.
  5. Walk to lunch. Instead of driving your car to lunch or simply having lunch at your desk, walk the couple of extra blocks or even the extra couple miles. Not only will you keep your body constantly on the move, but it can be very relaxing as well – stress has been associated with a decreased life expectancy as well!
  6. Walk more. Call and email less. Instead of talking on the phone or constantly checking your email, try and arrange meetings with people face to face. Anytime you have a question, walk to your co-workers office and ask them the question. If they’re not there, walk down there an hour or so later and try again.
  7. Turn your chair into a workout session. Remember point 4. Once you’ve purchased your chair, it’s time to put it to good use. Simply take a 5-10 minute break from your work every day and start working out with your chair, rather it be an exercise ball, treadmill or stationary bike.
