Travel: Wagging and Wanderlust—The Best Places to Vacation with Your Pet

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably passed up a vacation or two (or seven) because you knew you’d be too guilt-ridden about leaving your pup behind to enjoy yourself.

Not to worry, though–the days of the wishing-you-were-elsewhere stay-cation margarita can finally come to an end for me and for you, because I have finally found a way to enjoy myself in a new place without having to leave my pet behind. (I wish I could take credit for this, but apparently “pet vacations” were thought up a long time ago by folks a whole lot smarter than I am, but clearly equally as canine devoted.)

So, without further ado, here are the best destinations in the U.S. for both you and your four-legged loved one:

San Diego, CA:

This city is incredibly dog-friendly, boasting numerous places where you and your dog can share a bed (if you’re into that sort of thing). When you wake up, you can go for a hike, take a stroll in the sand, or visit a dog park, and when you’re through, you can take Fido to a fancy restaurant for dinner. That’s right, some restaurants in SD not only allow dogs, they have dog menus.

The clincher, though, is that in San Diego, your dog can actually learn to surf. There’s a very real, annual competition for dog surfing on Coronado Island, which is just one of three dog-beaches in the city.

Key West, FL:

You don’t need to be channeling your inner Hemingway to enjoy Key West, and neither does your pet. On the island, you will frequently see a type of breed commonly referred to as the “basket hound.” And while the name is something of a joke, the phenomenon isn’t. Bike rentals are a hot thing there, as are bike trailers to tote your pup around in. And bike rides aren’t the only adventures your pet can enjoy in the Keys—dogs are also allowed on kayak and paddleboard trips.

Austin, Texas:

Ever wanted to take your dog on a luxury vacation? Well, this is the place. Austin is home of the Driskill Hotel, ornate lodging that will pamper your pup with specialty beds, food bowls, leashes, chew toys, and treats while you stay. If your dog is 35 lbs. or under, that is.

Austin also contains 10 dog parks where your pet can roam, and numerous locations that you can take your pup provided he wears his leash.

And no luxury vacation would be complete without Doga—yoga for both you and your dog (this gives new meaning to ‘downward dog,’ does it not?) available here.

Bar Harbor, Maine:

Maine: famous for lobster fisherman and New England’s only National Park (I only learned the second part after Obama took his dog there). This destination makes the list not necessarily because it is the most dog-friendly town (although it offers its share of hotels and parks that welcome critters), but because it is so beautiful. I mean, the pictures will be Christmas-card quality.

*As a final note: These are, of course, all places in the country. If you’re thinking of taking your pet to a destination outside of the states, you’ll want to make sure they’ve been properly vaccinated and that they’ve been cleared by your vet to travel. You might also consider investing in insurance if you don’t already have it, just in case. It’s better to be over-prepared than underprepared*
