If you’re after a stunning destination with knock-out scenery and a lovely relaxed vibe, a spell in Kefalonia could be the perfect tonic. This beautiful Greek island, cast out into the Ionian Sea, is a haven of dramatic coastlines, soaring peaks and lush green forests. It has become famous for its beaches, which feature steep craggy cliffs that reach dizzying heights, and tiny sheltered bays that give way to sparkling turquoise waters.

If cheap holidays are on the agenda, you won’t find too much of that in Kefalonia. But given its spectacular scenery and lovely, laid-back appeal, it’s usually worth forking out that bit extra for.

It’s home to many towns and villages that offer a distinctive charm all of their own. Argostoli is the main town and is a great spot to while away an afternoon shopping, browsing the museum’s archaeological collections, and enjoying the local Greek cuisine. For a quieter experience, head to lovely Agia Efimia or pretty Sami in the east, both of which are generally quiet and Sami also has an attractive marina – perfect for kicking back and watching the hustle and bustle of a working port.

It’s also worth visiting Assos on the north-west coast. It’s a pretty village with pastel-coloured buildings clinging to a hilly peninsula, which is a spectacle in its own right – and from here you can make your way to explore the ruins of a Venetian fortress. Have your wits about you, as the descent is steep and precarious!

Finally, make time to visit Kefalonia’s attractive village of Lourdas. This sleepy little place has Spartan roots and features a beautiful long, sand and shingle beach. It’s a quaint and traditional village with a pretty square and a smattering of tavernas and live music bars, which is where you’ll find the Kefalonian locals come nightfall.

Greece is popular with sun-seekers looking for cheap holidays and beach breaks in the sun. You may find this in Kefalonia, but there’s plenty more to know about this stunning island than meets the eye. It’s fair to say that a visit to Kefalonia isn’t just a holiday, it’s an experience – and one that’s bound to live with you long after you return home.
