Puerto Rico is a tropical land of adventure and culture. Consisting of a main island and several smaller islands, it is the home to the Bacardi Factory, rain forests, mountains, beaches, the Coqui frog, Puerto Rican Parrot, Mofongo and a Bioluminescent Bay that glows iridescently at night.
One of the first stops has to be a trip to the El Yunque National Forest. The only tropical rain forest in the United States Forest System, the 28,000 acres is home to over 200 species of trees, birds and the Coqui frog. A perfect hike to view the flora, fauna and waterfalls.
After the rain forest head to nearby Luquillo Beach…just don’t stay till dusk and chance getting bit by sand fleas like I did.
One of the best dining experiences is at Marmalade. They are known for their yummy “global warming” drink and decadent food.
Don’t forget to try a Puerto Rico speciality, like Mofongo. (Smashed plantains topped with either chicken, beef or shrimp).
Oh, and of course…flavored mojitos! (Pictured: raspberry & coconut)
